A First Impression

Business Symposium Focused:

Attending the 2022-2023 ISM Business Symposium allowed me an exclusive opportunity to connect with experienced professional individuals and gain valuable feedback and information. It gave me the chance to network and improve upon my skills more than I realized. Initially, I was expecting to struggle with interviews or become too nervous to ask questions and rather stay awkward and quiet. However, after seeing how many other talented and outgoing students there were trying to make themselves stand out, it gave me courage to push myself out of my comfort zone and talk to different types of people.

I have to say the most challenging thing was standing out from so many other students, but after attending the professionalism in the 21st century workplace seminar, I was able to recognize the great importance of a first impression and and strong handshake, which I found to be surprising since I did not realize the extent to which it affects the meeting.

After my third interview, I received much positive feedback about my authenticity and genuity. I learned that my interviewer enjoyed speaking with me and described me as "a very likable person" and easy to get along with.

The final keynote address had perhaps the greatest effect on me for his storytelling capabilities. The way in which he connected with students and motivated us to strive for greatness through sharing his own experiences and humor allowed me to really enjoy his address and it stuck with me strongly.

This information that I've gained from the Symposium will prove useful in all future professional interactions I may have and has set me up for success. From a strong handshake and warm, welcoming smile, to authenticity and the passion to strive for greatness, the ISM Business Symposium has allowed me to become better prepared and skilled for my professional career.
